펜실베니아 주요도시>
펜실베니아의 주도는 해리스버그이며 최대도시는 필라델피아이다. 필라델피아는 필라델피아 크림 치즈와 록키란 영화로 잘 알려져 있지만, 사실 현지 인들은 필라델피아 크림치즈를 생각보다 많이 먹지 않는다. 그리고 필라델피아는 1790 ~ 1800년까지 미국의 수도였던 도시이기도 하며 피츠버그와 알렌타운도 주요 도시들 중 하나이다.
남동부의 랭커스터군 일대는 ‘펜실베니아 더치 컨트리’로 알려져 있는데, 초기 독일 이민자들이 지금까지도 당시 모습 그대로 생활을 하고 있는 곳입이며 최고의 대학인 펜실베니아대학교, 피츠버그대학교 및 주립에서도 상당히 수준이 높은 팬실베니아 주립대 등 131개의 고등 교육 기관이 있다.
농업, 임업, 광업, 철강업 등으로 산업과 경제의 발전과 쇠퇴를 겪었던 펜실베니아는 오늘날에도 여전히 제 1의 철강 생산지 이지만, 강한 교육, 금융, 의료업 등 제조업 활동에서 서비스업에 기초를 둔 경제로 급속히 바뀌었다. 펜실베니아는 서비스업 고용에서 큰 비중을 차지하고 있으며 필라델피아와 피츠버그 지역에는 서드 연방 상호 은행의 본사, 주요 증권 거래소, 몇몇 큰 지주 회사들이 위치하여 국가적 금융의 중심지이며, 주도 해리스버그는 정부 활동의 중심지이다.
그 밖에도 펜실베니아는 제조업에서도 중요한 위치로 펜실베니아에는 화학 제조업체들과 세계적인 처방약 제조업체들이 운영되고 있으며 아스피린 제조업 또한 피츠버그에서 운영되고 있다. 또 빵, 케이크, 초콜릿, 낙농제품의 제조업도 번성하였으며 가장 큰 초콜릿 회사인 허쉬 초콜렛의 본사가 있기도 하다. 더불어 쇠퇴하였음에도 여전히 철강, 유리, 플라스틱, 컴퓨터와 전자용품 등의 제조업, 농업, 광업들도 활발히 진행되고 있습니다.
