미시간(Michigan)주는 오대호 중 슈피리어호· 휴런호 ·미시간호 사이에 있는 북부반도와 미시간호·휴런호 사이에 있는 남부반도로 이루어지며 특이하게 두 개의 서로 떨어져 있는 반도로 이루어져 있다. 두 반도 사이에는 매키노 다리를 통해 연결되어 있다. 서쪽은 위스콘신(Wisconsin)주, 남쪽은 인디애나(Indiana)· 오하이오(Ohio)주에 접하고, 북쪽과 동쪽은 오대호 및 좁은 수로를 사이에 두고 캐나다와 접해있다. 위스콘신(Wisconsin)주와 육지로 접한 북부반도는 산지와 구릉이 많고, 주경계 부근에 고기빅 산맥이 있으며, 남부 반도는 전체적으로 평지가 많다. 미시건의 북부지역은 정말 혹독한 겨울로 정평이 나 있다. 초중고의 경우 추위로 인하여 학교를 휴교하는 경우도 많이 있지만 미시건의 대학 들이 세계적인 명문으로 발돋움하게 된 데에는 끊임 없는 교육에 대한 투자가 결실을 맺고 있다는 의미로 해석 되겠다.
미시간 주요도시>
미시간(Michigan)주의 주도는 랜싱(Lansing) 이며 가장 큰 도시는 디트로이트(Detroit)로 미국 최대의 공업도시이며 철강, 자동차, 방위산업 등으로 공장이 즐비하다. 그야말로 철강의 경우는 우리나라 포스코와 중국의 철강업체에 밀려 아시아 산업에 직격탄을 맞게 되어 대량실업이 발생하였지만, 중앙정부의 투자와 자동차 방위산업이 천천히 되살아나며 예전 미시간까지는 아니지만 많은 본래의 모습으로 되찾아 가고 있다. 디트로이트 외의 주요 도시로는  charlevoix, holland가 있다.
미시간 특징>
미시간주는 미국에서 자동차의 제1 생산지입니다.  특히 디트로이트(Detroit) 일대에는 제너럴 모터스 ·포드 ·크라이슬러 등 세계적인 3대 자동차 회사의 본사 공장이 집결해 있다. 그 밖에 철강 ·금속 ·기계 ·식품가공 ·가구제조 ·제지 등의 공업도 상당히 발전 하였으며, 가구제조는 그랜드 래피즈(Grand Rapids) 지역에서 사무용 가구들을 생산하고, 제지는 잭슨(Jackson)이 유명하다.
북부반도에는 철과 구리 산지가 많아 광물자원이 풍부하고, 남부반도는 농업이 중심이며, 특히 낙농업이 왕성하여 도처에서 많은 목장들을 볼 수 있다. 미시간호 동쪽 연안은 멜론 ·포도 ·배 ·사과 ·복숭아 등의 대산지로 알려져 있으며. 관광산업도 번창하여 연간 1,000만 명을 넘는 관광객을 기록했으며 미시간 대학 ·미시간 주립대학 등 대학 수 만도 약 90개교에 이르며 미국에서 고등학교 졸업 요건으로 ACT 응시를 지정한 주 중의 하나 이다.

미시간 주 최고의 대학이며 유학생들에게 악명 높은 학비로 유명한 미시간 대학(앤아버)를 비롯하여 미시건 주립대와 아트스쿨은 미시건 주 뿐만 아니라 미국 전역의 최고의 대학으로 명성이 높다. 대학의 명성과 동시에 스포츠 클럽과 대학 팀은 주의 브랜드를 세계에 알리는 역할을 톡톡히 하게 되었다. 특히 30여개의 컬리지는 미국에서 4번째로 많은 커뮤니티 컬리지를 보유하고 있는 주 중의 하나이다.
